A relationship has always existed between humans and their environment. Globalization is certainly affecting that relationship. On the one hand, it may be that “globalization” promotes a recognition or realization or understanding that “human impacts” are no longer local but global (and planetary) As such the process of globalization may encourage a global willingness (or perhaps just acknowledgement) to act on that understanding. On the other hand, the process of globalization may be forcing environmental concerns to take a back seat to economic and political concerns.
The comments below discuss this in light of the following questions:
What evidence exists for either of the points of view expressed above? Further then, what “mechanisms” (institutions, policies, laws, habits, practices, phenomena) are encouraging positive global action? What “mechanisms” are privileging economic and social concerns over environmental concerns?
What are the most pressing contemporary global issues concerning the environment? What environmental problems exist? What beneficial developments are occurring? What deleterious developments are occurring?
